After almost three years, Garmin has updated its Zumo motorcycle navigation product line with a model featuring a 6" display and a slightly different target audience. The XT is a practical navigation device for almost all types of motorcyclists – it will satisfy both touring enthusiasts and more adventurous riders in the Adventure category. The Tread series was designed for off-road customers, especially riders of quad bikes, S2S, buggies, etc. The new Zumo XT2 is similar in character to the Tread, especially in terms of its user interface and control logic, which is missing in the XT model range (e.g. easy switching of settings in memory according to riding style). The phone app that provides online data for navigation has also changed (the existing Tread app is now used, which is significantly more complex than the original Drive for XT). However, both models are expected to be sold concurrently until at least the end of 2024. Our opinion (after almost six months of testing XT2 prototypes) is that the XT is easier and more practical for everyday riders, while the XT2 is better for riders who will make more use of imported tracks (GPX) and routing in the mobile app. The display is noticeably better, but given that the XT display is one of the best on the market, this is only apparent when comparing these devices directly, and for most users it will not be a compelling reason to switch. The route calculation speed is very similar, as is the rendering of the map with map background details.
On the positive side, the ability to send tracks or routes directly from other applications on your phone (sharing via Garmin Tread) has not changed – for example, from the MAPY.CZ or MY ROUTE APP applications, but it is missing from the Tread company application, which supports planning directly in the application. The navigation system supports the current version of the Czech topographic map, and the map licence is included in the basic package. The power module (back) is similar in size and design to the original version on the XT, but has one more pin, a wider layout, and does not use a 12V to 5V conversion module, supplying power directly from 12V. Garmin officially states that the holder (cable) should not be used. Advantages over the XT:

- The Tread app does not convert tracks and routes to a single type after synchronisation via the Explore server, but retains their original character - Extended map set with basic topographic coverage of Europe, the Middle East, the USA, South America, Australia and New Zealand. Partial coverage of Africa, including Tracks4Africa routes. Maps are played back to the navigation system from Garmin Express as standard. - Option to use the Garmin Power Switch to control various lights (on S2S vehicles, buggies, etc.) in the same way as with Tread devices.
- Option to enable the function of removing waypoint icons from the map when zoomed in (when the icons block the display of map details). - The navigation device can be recharged via USB-C at a reasonable speed without having to charge a completely discharged device from the motorcycle mount. - 32 GB internal memory. - Stronger spring on the motorcycle mount latch.
- Direct power supply from 12V on-board network without inline 5V adapter with higher current if necessary (the navigation device itself regulates consumption according to the battery charge status)
